Sometimes something catches your eye and you just know that one day, you'll be bringing that puppy home with you. So it was with Nails Inc Porchester Square - the first time I saw that baby on Anna's blog, I knew it had to be mine. A purple-toned greige, it sits in that perfect nude-but-not space that makes me think of Parisian women sipping cafe-au-lait on pavement corners. Barely-there colour? I'm all about it.

But, sensibly, whilst toying with the Gel Effect version of the shade (which'll set you back a nifty £12.60), my girl Adrienne mentioned that a shade she owned, Models Own Utopia, was almost identical. Interest piqued, I decided to make the best use of Boots 3 for 2 offer and play my own little version of 'find the drugstore dupe'.

Barry M Matte in Nude Vanilla - And the award for most inappropriately titled nail varnish goes to....! This shade is gorgeous, and definitely leans more on the opaque purple side, but I can dig it. It's not so much a Porchester Square dupe as a happy accident - the finish of this is laaaavly, and matte actually really suits this colour. I've read some bad reviews about the Barry M Matte line, but I was nothing but impressed!

Models Own Utopia - Of course I snapped this beauty right up! This is probably the truest match in the bottle and on the nails - for some reason on the wheel above it looks more purple than it shows up, on my nails anyway. The finish is quite milky thought and this is definitely a lovely, subtle pastel for spring. A major downer for this product though was the skinnier-than-skinny polish brush and patchy application until I reached the second coat.

Rimmel 60 Second polish in Mary Mary Quite Contrary - This purple was more blue-toned than the colour I was after, and disappointingly needed around 2-3 coats before it really showed up opaque. On the plus side, this had a lovely thick brush which makes application a dream, and the finish is pretty glossy once you build it to the colour you want.

So, great success? Not so much. But I can say that I'm actually really pleased I picked these three up, and I've hopefully found the perfect pastel purple (try saying that three times fast) for my spring wardrobe. As for Porchester Square? Well, it might just slip into my basket sometime soon...

  3. I absolutely love Utopia and wore it for weeks when I first bought it. However Mary Mary Quite Contrary has also caught my eye a few times as it looks like such a gorgeous shade, plus as you said, the 60 second thicker brushes make application so easy! x

  4. These are all such gorgeous shades that are perfect for any season. I want to give the Rimmel 60 Second nail polishes a go but the shade range in Canada right now isn't very good. xx
