When it comes to shade range in nail varnish, I'm pretty confident in saying Essie is almost unchallengeable.

Every season, we're treated to a new selection from this brand and over the years, I've hoarded stockpiled a little collection of my favourite shades. So since we're in the heart of Autumn, I thought today I'd walk you through my picks for this time of year.

Sole Mate (top, centre) is a rich, plummy berry cream which looks beautiful with a statement lip and a monochrome outfit. I love a jewel tone this time of year and this one will look flattering against most skins, if not all!

A classic, dark Oxford blue (this means different things to different people but as I work for a department of the University, trust), After School Boy Blazer is new to my collection but has already made an impact. It's a deep rich blue black that looks so smart and polished on nails and the cream formula without any metallic sheen makes it look super professional and pulled together.

An oldie but a goodie - For The Twill Of It is unlike any other polish in my collection. My boyf did a great job describing it when he said it was almost like a petrol spill - a two or three tone metallic which shows up green-to-pinky brown-to-purple depending on the light. It's a unique shade that always gets compliments whenever I wear it, and because of its versatility can be partnered with a lot of make up looks.

Introduced to me by Hey Claire's channel, Essie's Wicked is something of a cult classic for the brand. I'd call this the high street equivalent of Chanel Rouge Noir, with more brown tones. It's definitely a really classic, sexy shade - one for date night.

What I'm wearing in the photo is Ready to Boa, which was from the Winter collection last year. A beautiful copper metallic - it's described as a warm mulberry and I wouldn't disagree. It's a perfectly autumnal colour that'll have you blending right in with the changing leaves. Cosy!

Finally another metallic, and a long-time fav of mine - Penny Talk. My first (!) Essie nail varnish and one I can never get rid of - this copper/rose gold/bronze hue is my go-to party shade and makes me smile every time I wear it! The mirror metallics really do have a mirror-like shine to them and this still looks as good now as it did the first time I wore it.

Finally - I have to talk about the Essie Gel Top Coat. This is easily one of the best top coats I've ever used - fast drying, no chips and staying power of up to a week without me taking a huge amount of care not to chip my nails - I have been SO impressed with this stuff. The formula is nice and smooth, not gloopy at all, and the wide brush makes for very easy application. This is definitely the star of the show for me - I'm pretty sure I've found my perfect top coat in this one!
